A constant tension exists for new entrepreneurs between the exciting and challenging prospect of successfully running one’s own business and the draw of the familiarity of a regular paying job and the perks that go with it. In our case, we enjoyed a relatively long career with a single employer so this self-employment gig is a new experience. There is no question that this new approach to making a living is going well. We are making a living — touch wood! We have some awesome clients and they keep us busy. We are learning that one key to success is keeping options open.

A couple of months ago, we were given an opportunity to explore another avenue of employment while also maintaining Daily Designz. Working as an auxiliary graphic designer at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in the Marketing and Communications department over the summer was a great experience. The work was suitably challenging and fun and the crew up there was great to work with even though they took turns taking holidays and some days were lonelier than others.

It was refreshing to be back in an academic milieu after a number of years. Being on TRU’s beautiful campus everyday certainly brought back fond memories of university days spent at another one of Canada’s smaller post-secondary schools, namely, Trent University in Peterborough, ON. Both institutions enjoy fantastic settings and some stunning architecture. The view from my office at TRU was superb — watching the weather changes roll in, magpies hopping past on the windowsill, the almost daily visit in the quad by local deer, not to mention the undulating roof of a renovated Old Main.

The diversity and volume of projects and collateral in addition to branding challenges made it an engaging couple of months. One of the projects that ran through the entire two months was TRU’s upcoming 45th Anniversary Celebration. While this one project punctuated the entire two months, we had the pleasure of working on many other projects with equal satisfaction.

The challenge of incorporating a steady, (albeit temporary) full-time gig into an already busy schedule was highly worthwhile and we’d do it again in a heartbeat. In our view it is just one more way to add to the success of Daily Designz. We’ll be waiting by the phone…
